Calling someone a βheavy hitterβ means they pull an inordinate amount of weight on their team and pack an exceptional punch at whatever they do. Recorded usage of the term dates to the 1870s when it was used to describe baseball players who consistently hit the ball hard and far, producing a remarkable number of extra-base hits.
