Where English speakers might say “Bottom’s up!” or “Cheers!” to kick off a chug, the German equivalent is “Prost!” Bavarian superstition says that if one doesn’t make eye contact with those whom they’re clinking glasses with as they toast, they incur seven years of bad luck.

Despite its name, Oktoberfest, a two-week-long autumnal celebration of Bavarian cuisine, beer, and culture, takes place mostly in September. It starts on the first Saturday on or after September 15th and runs to the first Sunday in October.
