El Salvador means "The Savior" in Spanish. It s the smallest country in Central America and the only one with no Caribbean coastline. It's nickname is the "Land of Volcanoes" as it has over 100 volcanoes packed within its borders.

Five Central American countries all celebrate independence on September 15, because they were governed together as the Captaincy General of Guatemala and broke from Spain with a single declaration signed in Guatemala City in 1821.
