When the Act of Independence of Central America was signed in 1821, the Province of Guatemala (Spanish for “place of many trees”) spanned across much of modern-day Central America and into southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas.

Five Central American countries all celebrate independence on September 15, because they were governed together as the Captaincy General of Guatemala and broke from Spain with a single declaration signed in Guatemala City in 1821.
