Nicaragua's name is traced to Nicarao, a chief who ruled the shores of (what's now called) Lake Nicaragua. Its capital, Managua, takes its name from a Nahuatl phrase meaning roughly "surrounded by water" or "town beside the water," and it became the capital in 1852 as a compromise between the feuding rival cities of León and Granada.
